floathouse Reciprocal Inhibition - Float House

Joseph Wolpe’s theory of reciprocal inhibition states that when you expose someone with anxiety to the very sensations which are linked to anxiety (heart beat, breath, etc), but in the context of relaxation a new association can be formed.

These physiological sensations typically drive anxiety as a reflexive response (through the sympathetic nervous system - fight or flight) - but now can be reassociated with relaxation - a deeper connection with your body. During a float you can essentially reprogram the reactions to these sensations.

A float can elicit a mental “reset”. Patterns exist throughout our lives. Going throughout our daily routines we get “numb” to so much around us, we become automatic with so many of our thoughts, our actions, our environments. The “resetting” experience provided by the tank can shift us out of this automated existence and bring us into greater awareness of the things we are often over-looking, less aware of or insensitive to, and not appreciating.
