Our brains cycle through various different brain waves:
Beta waves: alert wakefulness
Alpha waves: relaxed wakefulness
Theta waves: deep meditation, light sleep
Delta waves: deep sleep
Floating and its reflexive relaxation response, make it easier for the brain to downshift from alpha waves into theta waves.
This unique state of relaxation shifts your brain into a theta brain state which elicits the body’s natural healing capabilities. The theta state traditionally occurs just before sleeping and just after awakening. The floating experience has been shown to produce and potentially extend the theta state, which can facilitate deep learning, healing, and growth.
With the brain being held in a theta state wave-length the mind becomes hyper-suggestible. With less distractions and greater resources at its disposal the mind is able to absorb new material very deeply with research showing improved performance in memory and recall activities. It is great to use in conjunction with exam preparation. The combination of being extremely relaxed while intensely awake allows techniques of visualization to become very powerful. From athletes preparing for competition to public speakers rehearsing a presentation, the tank can induce the calm needed to perform at ones best. Mental rehearsal research has shown it to be just as practical as physical rehearsal.
